A company devoted entirely to art: the name Caran d'Ache was the pseudonym of the famous French caricaturist and cartoonist of the nineteenth century, Russian-born Emmanuel Poiré. "Karandash" is the Russian word for pencil; word from the Turkish root "kara tash" relating to "the black rock" (graphite). An ode to the brand to its roots, as pioneered manufacture graphite pencils in Switzerland; a commodity highly valued and is located precisely in the mountains of that country.
